The most I've done thus gar has been to take a couple of courses.  I've learned how to make a drink and fly a plane???

Actually - the bartending course was fun and I learned some, but by the time I took the flying class I was already a bit bored with the content and didn't pursue it as diligently.  Well designed courses in your area of interest should work well.
